The department provides theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field of prevention during the installation and operation of electrical equipment, fire alarm and automatic fire extinguishing systems.
The Department of Electrical Engineering, Industrial and Fire Automation was established in August 2006 at the Lviv State University of Life Safety as a result of the reorganization of the department of Electrical Engineering, Automation and Communication. The department at that time consisted of ten scientific and pedagogical workers, including one Doctor of Sciences and four Doctors of Philosophy (technical sciences).
Currently, the department belongs to the Institute of Firefighting and Industrial Safety. The educational process at the department is provided by skilled scientific and pedagogical workers. There are seven scientists and lecturers who work at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Industrial and Fire Automation on a regular basis.

The Department of Electrical Engineering, Industrial and Fire Automation was established in August 2006 as a result of reorganization of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Automation and Communication. To support the study process the department staff prepared and published a number of textbooks approved by the Academic Council of the University and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, adapted to the Bologna system of training specialists:

- "Automatic fire detectors of fire alarm systems" (A. Kushnir),
- "Mathematical modeling and study of technical objects" (V. Hudym, B. Kinash, N. Kuharska).

Research and teaching staff of the department teach at special training courses for professionals at industrial facilities in Ukraine, which provide licensing to perform works connected with fire safety.
 

Material-technical base: 

     A modern laboratory specialized in electrical engineering and fire prevention electrical equipment operates at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Industrial and Fire Automation in order to provide training of practical skills in the field of prevention of electrical systems and electrical installations. There are 6 stands in the laboratory in which physical analogues are combined with computers. This provides an opportunity to simulate real conditions of AC/DC electrical installations operation and preserving results obtained in computer memory. Department staff developed a set of computer simulation laboratory tasks on the theory of electrical circuits based on mathematical models. The laboratory tasks allow simulating the same working conditions of electrical equipment as ones on physical models and compare the results. There are also 4 stands in the laboratory which allow cadets and students to explore the specifications of electric motors and emergency modes of operation.
          
     In this laboratory future specialists are able to consolidate the knowledge gained during lectures, learn and research the real electromagnetic phenomena and processes that can lead to emergencies due to natural disasters and technological accidents at work and at home.     
In "Fire Prevention at Electrical Equipment" study room cadets and students identify causes of accidents and study preventive measures. With the help of existing electrical installations, models and stands future professionals learn to determine compliance of electrical equipment with environment, thereby preventing possible fires, explosions and accidents caused by people.
 
     Laboratory of Industrial and Fire Equipment consists of several rooms, containing stands and models, means of industrial and fire machinery, elements of fire alarm systems. One of the rooms is equipped with modern operating sprinkler and drencher fire extinguishing equipment with different specifications. The other room provides models of gas and powder stationary fire extinguishing equipment. Future professionals study structure, principles of operation of these systems and are able to carry out setup and maintenance, which helps to increase their professional and scientific level significantly. The acquired knowledge will enable future graduates of the University to provide safety both at workplace and at home.

A research project: "Development of mathematical models of consumers’ electricity supply systems for the evaluation of electromagnetic and thermal processes and reliability of life safety systems" was completed in March 2011. Within the project scientists and lecturers of the department conducted experimental studies and mathematical modeling of electric and thermal processes in low voltage electrical networks.
Currently, the department staff is working on the following topics of scientific research:
 

 
1. Improving the methodology for assessing the causes of fires in public and residential constructions due to internal electrical networks (Prof. V. Hudym, lecturer O. Nazarovets)
2. Improvement of methods to identify causes of fires in vehicles due to board electrical networks (Prof. V. Hudym, adjunct A. Havryluyk)

 
3. Modeling and development of means to confine overvoltage of switching and storm origin (Prof. V. Hudym, lecturer O. Nazarovets, researcher R. Satsio)
4. Synthesis of dual-mass electromechanical systems of fire equipment. Research and development of fire detectors specifications (Associate Professor A. Kushnir)
5. Development of methods and means for the diagnosis of the technical condition of household electrical networks in order to prevent fires (Prof. Hudym, Associate Professor Yu. Rudyk)
6. Self-contained power sources in fire automation equipment (Major of Civil Defense Service O. Shapovalov).

 

Science students and cadets: 

     Research activities of cadets and students:

Scientific and technical society at the department consists of nine cadets and students involved in research and development work. Under supervision of the department staff they took part in the International scientific conference of students and students “Problems and prospects of life safety”, which was held in March 21, 2013 at our university. Members of the society participated in the competition of scientific works of cadets and students of the university and course projects on “Fire and manufacturing automation” and university competition on “General Electronics”.

 The department staff continuously conducts individual educational talks and informative discussions with platoons of cadets and groups of students. Under supervision of lecturers cadets and students go on sightseeing tours and excursions to historical places of Lviv region and Ukraine.

Scientific research is one of the main areas of department activities. O. Nazarovets, A. Havryluyk and O. Shapovalov are writing dissertations with research topics of the department. On January 25, 2013 M. Yurkiv defended a dissertation on "Development of methods for electric networks analysis in order to evaluate and prevent fire-hazardous modes". The research was done under scientific supervision of Professor V. Hudym.
A research laboratory, which is constantly improved and updated, was established at the department to provide scientists with measuring equipment and allow postgraduate students and adjuncts to conduct experimental research successfully.
 

Information for entrants: 

   Information for entrants:

Graduates who enter the Lviv State University of Life Safety on the basis of complete secondary education and would like to obtain the qualification of Bachelor, have their competitive score calculated according by adding scores from test certificates of competitive subjects, the average grade of the school leaving certificate, the test results of physical fitness assessment and extra points (in case they are presupposed the orders of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine).
Admission is held on the following dates:

  •       for full-time learning – up to August25;
  •       learning by correspondence – up to September 22.

Entrants who would like to study by state order have to pass:

  •       medical examination by medical-expert commission with obligatory psychophysiological research (assessment of neuro-psychological stability and ability of the applicant to perform the duties of rescuer);
  •       assessment of physical training level.

Applicants who have submitted certificates with points below 140 at competitive subjects and less than 124 points of non-competitive subjects are not allowed to participate in the entrance competition.
Assessment of knowledge, level of fitness of applicants for entrance examinations at the Lviv State University of Life Safety is performed on a scale of 100 to 200 points. During the competitive selection of the test results assessment of fitness level is taken into account along with the results of the external evaluation certificates. At the time of entrance examinations applicants are not provided with free accommodation, meals and travel.
The list of subjects which are considered competitive for the entrants who choose “Fire safety” as a major direction of training:
- Mathematics;
- Ukrainian Language and Literature;
- Physics or Chemistry.
