Within the framework of the international project " Ecologistics - improving the management of solid waste landfills in Lviv region" scientists of Lviv State University of Life Safety Roman Ratushnyi, Vasyl Popovych, Oleh Stokaliuk, Pavlo Bosak, Roman Sukach, Volodymyr-Petro Parkhomenko, Volodymyr Tovaryanskyi, Natalia Hotsii, Kateryna Stepova, Roman Konanets, Iryna Fediv, Iryna Kochmar, Vasyl Karabyn, Taras Shuplat, Andrii Voloshchyshyn published their findings in the monograph “Ecologistics - Theory and Practice of Landfill Management”. The monograph reveals a set of dangerous environmental problems caused by the negative impact of landfills on the components of the environment. These negative consequences are caused by the unresolved problem of household waste management in Ukraine. Moreover, the urgency of this issue in Ukraine is growing every year, as the number of stationary (effective and decommissioned) and natural landfills is increasing and their geography is expanding by region.
The combined negative environmental impact and the public danger posed by landfill fires lead to increased demand for research aimed at monitoring landfill processes, detailed study of the impact of waste on environmental components, the development of mechanisms for optimizing sorting, collection, transportation, storage household waste, development and implementation of infrastructure projects aimed at attracting modern technologies for disposal and recycling of household waste, the implementation of large-scale reclamation projects and the transformation of yesterday's dangerous devastated places into landscape objects that perform recreational and environmental roles.
It is very important to reveal the role of public initiative in the collection and sorting of household waste as a means of establishing an effective model of municipal waste management in an urban environment because it is an important primary link in household waste creation. Therefore, scientific popularization and educational work in society on the issue of household waste management is extremely important.
Given that the negative impact on the environment can be transboundary, it is important to exchange theoretical experience, research, and implementation of joint research projects of varying complexity and scale.
Virtually all aspects of these issues, as evidenced by this collective scientific monograph, are successfully implemented through the international project "Ecologistics - improving the management of solid waste landfills in the Lviv region."
Both scientists from Ukraine and Poland are solving a range of important scientific issues, and developing mechanisms, the practical implementation of which will help increase the level of environmental safety of landfills and minimize their possible negative impact on the environment. This combination of scientific efforts on a long-term basis will bring significant environmental results in the future.
