Department of Information Security Management

The Department of Information Security Management trains specialists in the educational and qualification level of bachelor and master in the specialty 125 "Cybersecurity".
The educational program of the specialty "Cybersecurity" was developed jointly with specialists of leading IT companies in Lviv. Most of the subjects in the curriculum are completely new disciplines focused on the needs of the market, especially the IT industry. The program radically changed the set of disciplines, which was made possible by the close cooperation of the department with leading experts from Softserve and Eleks in the field of cybersecurity.
 
According to this program, the department will train specialists specializing in cybersecurity engineer (SecOps). Starting in the first year, future professionals will study the organization of IT in the enterprise (ITIL) and the basics of cybersecurity (CyberSecurity Fundamentals). As a result of studying these disciplines, students must understand the main risks and threats of cybersecurity, as well as ways to protect and attack in modern information systems. Also, during the first two courses it is planned to study Python and C # programming languages. In the senior year, students will study cybersecurity tools (log collection and logging types, Netflow, IDS, Vulnerability scanning, SIEM); methods of attack and defense in computer networks; operating systems and their protection; WEB - programming and protection of web applications, cryptography. Another part of the training program is the organization of information security at the enterprise, analysis of risks and threats to cybersecurity using modern world standards. Starting from the second year, students majoring in "Cybersecurity" will undergo internships at IT companies, the best of which will be able to get a job with the future in these companies.

 

History of the department: 

The Department of Information Security Management was established in January 2011 as a result of the reorganization of the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunication Systems (ITTS), which was divided into two departments.
The new department was headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Yuriy Hrytsiuk, who was a professor at the ITTS Department.
Since September 2014, the department was headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Volodymyr Samoty.
The department is allocated premises in the educational building of the University and appropriate laboratories are assigned. It is a structural unit of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Civil Defense and provides teaching, educational and methodological work among cadets and students of the University.
In September 2020, Rostyslav Lvovych Tkachuk, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor, Colonel of the Civil Defense Service, was appointed Head of the Department.
The priority of the department was and remains the moral, legal and patriotic education of cadets, students and trainees, improving the educational process and professional level.

They are also curators of KB-11 - KB-51,61 groups, they regularly hold information hours and individual educational talks on academic success, debt elimination and other current topics.
To promote a healthy lifestyle, involvement in the national cultural heritage, acquaintance with the life, traditions and customs of the Ukrainian people, teachers of the Department of UIB - curators of groups conduct tours of Lviv, visit theaters, museums, exhibition halls, cinemas, art gallery, philharmonic, folk museum architecture and life "Shevchenkivsky grove" and more.
The sights of the city of Lviv are not limited to beautiful land buildings. A huge number of secrets and legends of this city lie in its dungeons. and Kukharska NP an interesting and informative tour of the dungeons of the city of the Dominican Cathedral, the Museum of the Pharmacy and the Jesuit Church was organized.
The participants of the tour were in the dungeons of the princely chambers, where they listened to fascinating stories about Halshka Ostrozka, the wife of Prince Leo Constance, interesting stories about the activities of the Dominican Order in Lviv and much more.
Cadets and students, as well as teachers of the department often attend the games of the Student, Galician and Open Television League of KVN and, at the same time, support the team of KVN "We want" of our University.
The teaching staff of the department takes an active part in the public life of the University, cooperates with the Council of Cadet and Student Self-Government, helps in the preparation and conduct of cultural and educational activities.
Lecturer of the Department Mandron MM is the initiator of a series of intellectual games of brain-ring, which are held among the teams of educational units of the Institute of Civil Defense and the Institute of Fire and Technogenic Safety, dedicated to the history of the Ukrainian Cossacks, computer science, Ukrainian Literature and Language Day, information security and more.
The department organized a training march of cadets and students in the Borzhava massif, located in the Transcarpathian region, Volovets, under the leadership of the teacher of the UPITT department - Hrytsiuk Maryana Yuriyivna.
During the route, the participants climbed several peaks: the Orthodox Cross - 1215 m; Temnatik - 1343 m; Playa - 1330 m, where the cadets of the direction of training "Information Security Management" together with the curator Maria Mandrona, raised the flag of their department on the tops. The length of the route was 18 km, altitude gain - 1000 m.
In November, in honor of the International Day for the Protection of Information, an IT quest is being held among students and cadets of Lviv. The main purpose of the IT quests is to promote information security among young people, as well as acquaintance, friendship and cooperation between students of different educational institutions.
Cadets and students of the department improve their cultural and artistic level in the brass band, circles of modern and folk dance, choral and church singing.
Prospects for the future of the Department of Information Security Management - cooperation with structural units of the SES and other agencies in the field of technical protection of information, security of information technology, as well as information security management.

Scientific-methodical work of the department: 

The key tasks of the Department of Information Security Management are not only in the organization at a high professional level of teaching disciplines and promoting the development of cadets and students, but also in the implementation of scientific and educational work.
Educational and methodical work of the department acts as a complex system of actions and activities aimed at developing syllabi of academic disciplines, publishing educational and methodical literature, training and professionalism of teaching staff. Methodical support covers all disciplines of the department.
The Department of Information Security Management organizes the annual All-Ukrainian scientific-practical conference of young scientists, students and cadets "Information Security and Information Technology".

Research and teaching staff of the department are engaged in active research activities in these areas, as a result of which over the past 5 years published about 40 scientific papers in periodicals indexed in the International scientometric databases Scopus and WebOfSciense (for more information link).
Scientific and pedagogical staff of the department are active participants and members of the organizing committees of international conferences, workshops and symposiums, including IEEE International Conference "Data Stream Mining & Processing", International Scientific and Technical Conference "Computer Science and Information Technologies", International Workshop on Informatics & Data -Driven Medicine and many others.
The department was the organizer of the 2015-2019 Interuniversity Scientific and Practical Conference of Students and Cadets "Information Protection in Information and Communication Systems" and the International Scientific and Technical Conference "Information Security in Modern Society". Also, since 2020 the department is a co-organizer of the All-Ukrainian Conference of Young Scientists, Students and Cadets "Information Security and Information Technology", which is held annually on the basis of Lviv State University of Life Safety (for more details link).
Research and teaching staff of the department, Ph.D., Professor Volodymyr Samoty, Ph.D., Associate Professor Rostyslav Tkachuk are current members of the Specialized Academic Council K 35.874.02 Lviv State University of Life Safety in the defense of dissertations in specialties: 05.13.22 - project and program management and 05.13.06 - information technologies (more about the council at the link).
In particular:
 Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Volodymyr Samoty from 2014 to 2017 - Member of the Specialized Academic Council, from 2017 to 2021 - Deputy Chairman of the Specialized Academic Council.
Doctor of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor Rostislav Tkachuk from 2015 to 2016 - Member of the Specialized Academic Council, 2016 to 2019 Scientific Secretary of the Specialized Academic Council, from 2020 to 2021 Chairman of the same Specialized Academic Council.
From 2018 to 2020, the scientific and pedagogical staff of the department took part in the initiative of the Department of Information Security Management on the topic: "Research and improvement of models of information security systems", which was successfully defended at the meeting of the Scientific and Technical Council in 2020.
The staff of the graduating department joins the review of scientific publications in the professional periodical "Visnyk of LSULS". Members of the editorial board are teachers of the graduating department, in particular: members of the editorial board, Ph.D., Professor Vladimir Samovy, Ph.D., Associate Professor Rostislav Tkachuk.
It should be noted that the collection of scientific papers "Bulletin of Lviv State University of Life Safety" (ISSN 2078-4643) was registered by the State Registration Service of Ukraine (series KV No. 20328-11128R of 12.03.2015), and included in the list of scientific professional publications as a printed periodical category "B" in the field of technical sciences in the specialty 125 "Cybersecurity".

Material-technical base: 

For the proper organization of the educational process at the department there are modern laboratories and computer classrooms, which are equipped with computer equipment, interactive whiteboards, multimedia equipment and other peripherals.
In the process of training future specialists in cybersecurity, the department provides teaching disciplines on the basis of the Center for Intelligent Modeling of a Secure Future (rooms 331-334), which is equipped with four state-of-the-art computer classrooms equipped with computers (Intel core i5), interactive whiteboards , means of visualization, etc. On the basis of the center the study of courses "Algorithms and methods of programming", "Information security in computer networks", "Ethical hacking", "Web-programming" and other profile disciplines is provided.

In 2020, the material and technical base of the university, including the department, was replenished with a complex of laboratories of information systems and technologies in the field of digital security (rooms 301-304). The complex includes 4 new and modern laboratories, the technical equipment of which allows for high-level training in both contact and distance form. In particular, the laboratory of social communications and information activities (room 301) is aimed at developing social skills and communication skills in students through training, teamwork and presentation of their own projects. The Laboratory of Information Systems Design and Security (room 302) is designed to develop the skills of future professionals to design and develop Web applications with a certain level of security against unauthorized intrusions. The Laboratory of Information Systems and Programming Technologies (room 303) aims to develop future computer science skills in software development, decision support systems and information systems to improve the efficiency of the rescue service. Laboratory of digital methods of information processing and protection (room 304) is designed to form in future professionals the basic concepts of protection of corporate networks and software products.
In total, the laboratory complex is equipped with 70 workstations with modern computer equipment (Lenovo V15 IIL Iron Gray 15.6 and PC based on Intel Pentium Gold G5400 CPU 3.70GHz). All computer classes of the complex are equipped with a system of remote access and control of the student's workplace, multimedia equipment and other technical means of learning, which significantly improve the quality and comfort of classes. The labs offer courses on "Operating Systems", "Computer Networks", "Using Python in Cyber ​​Security", "Designing and Protecting WEB Applications" and other courses focused on the design, development and maintenance of information systems.

The department also subordinates a multimedia educational complex (room 210) for 31 workstations with software that allows modeling and software development at different stages of the life cycle of its development. In 2020, the technical equipment of the training complex was completely updated and modern PCs based on Intel Pentium Gold G5420 CPU 3.80GHz processors were installed. In the classroom, students study professional courses as part of individual groups or teams.

During their studies, cadets and students take an active part in scientific work under the guidance of qualified teaching staff of the department. The scientific society of cadets and students of the department works fruitfully, whose works have repeatedly participated and been celebrated at various competitions and conferences both at our University and in other educational institutions and abroad.
The first scientific-practical conference "Information Security in Modern Society", dedicated to the International Information Protection Day, was organized by the joint efforts of the teachers of the department. The conference was actively attended by cadets and students, among whom the best were awarded diplomas. Also, the Department of UIB in February each year holds the first round of the All-Ukrainian Olympiad in the field of "Information Technology and Programming", which is attended by cadets and students of different courses of the University.

Teachers of the department regularly undergo internships in the above-mentioned IT companies.

It is planned that part of the classes will be conducted by Softserve employees. Senior students will be involved in real projects, which will allow them to gain practical experience while studying at the Lviv State University of Life Safety.

The graduate will have the skills to develop security systems for computer networks and electronic databases.
Will be able to assess the risks of leakage of information that is a state or trade secret. Will be able to make independent decisions in the face of constant software changes in the field of information security.

Cybersecurity is the field of protection of digital information, operating systems, computer networks, servers, databases, public and private institutions from unauthorized interference. Such interference may result in damage to software, databases, or the interception of confidential information for commercial purposes.

Cadets and students majoring in "Cybersecurity" acquire the necessary knowledge and skills in security management of information systems, organizations and enterprises, have the theory and practice of development and administration of information systems and software and hardware information security. Their field of activity is modern management, protection and surveillance systems used in the structural units of the SES of Ukraine and many other agencies.

Graduates of the UIB department can work in the following positions:

data, access, task and system administrator;
computer communications, systems and computer data analyst;
software developer, system programmer;
specialist (engineer) of the center of telecommunication systems and information technologies of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine;
specialist (engineer) of communication, notification and ACS departments of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine;
specialist of the department of technical protection of information of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine;
many other positions that require knowledge in the field of information security.
Also, graduates of the Department of UIB can work in structural units of information protection of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Security Service of Ukraine, units of the State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection, the State Tax Administration, banking institutions, railway management, customs.

Cadets and students of the Department of UIB acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to manage the security of information systems, organizations, enterprises and their maintenance, have the theory and practice of developing and administering systems and software and hardware information security. Their field of activity is modern management, protection and monitoring systems used in the structural units of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES of Ukraine) and a number of other agencies. Cadets and students of the Department of UIB in the learning process master the following professions:
● specialist in analytical and theoretical research in the field of technical protection of information from unauthorized access;
● specialist in the design and development, operation, modernization and repair of technical means of information protection;
● a specialist in ensuring the secrecy regime and organization of protection of classified information from unauthorized access.
Graduates of the Department of UIB can work in the following positions:

● software engineer, system programmer;
