Department of Ukrainian Studies

 

  The Department provides basic training of linguistic and cultural subjects. During its history the formation covered several stages of development: in May 2002 the Department of Language Teaching was established (the stuff provided teaching of Ukrainian and foreign languages), and in 2008 it was reorganized into the Department of Ukrainian Studies.

Department staff: 

 Department staff consists of energetic and creative teachers-facilitators, open to new ideas scholars, wishful to implement advanced methods and principles of teaching the Humanities in higher technical educational establishments.

Scientific-methodical work of the department: 

    The department staff is also actively engaged in teaching and research. They compile tutorials, textbooks and workbooks on subjects and courses from the curriculum.

The department staff actively s in the conferences and publishes articles on the subject of scientific research in scientific journals. Teachers and lectors participate in seminars on the problems of humanitarian development of a personality held by State Emergencies Service of Ukraine. 

Material-technical base: 

  Classes are held in the class of “Business Ukrainian language and culture”, in other classrooms of the University with multimedia equipment.


Areas of research: 

Research activities of the department combine humanitarian aspects of the State Emergencies Service of Ukraine with shpere of individual interests of the department staff. Results of cultural, linguistic and literary studies of the teachers and lecturers are being actively implemented in the educational process of the University.


Science students and cadets: 

   The Department annually organizes and holds national conferences. The International cadets and students scientific conference “Culture as a phenomenon of the human spirit” was held in 2011. It covered the traditional conceptual principles and priorities of the modern Ukrainian and world cultural paradigm. The participants (155 people) were both cadets and students of our university and guests from the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, National University "Lviv Polytechnic", Lviv State University of Internal Affairs, Lviv National University of Business and Law, Lviv branch of Dnipropetrovsk National University of Railway Transport, Ukrainian Academy of Printing, Academy of Fire Safety of Cherkasy, Command and Engineering Institute of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Belarus.
The scientific society of cadets and students was established at the department. One of the priorities of it is to train cadets and students for competitions and contests in the Ukrainian language. The department staff systematically trains cadets and students to participate in scientific conferences and seminars. Under the supervision of the department staff cadets and students are actively involved in the annual seminar held at the Lviv State University of Internal Affairs “Professional communication: language, culture, law”.
Teachers and lecturers of the department regularly organize workshops for cadets and students on academic reading of important figures, dates, events for Ukrainian culture. The first round of the Petro Yatsyk International Competition on the Ukrainian language is held annually at the University.
Interuniversity scientific workshop dedicated to Mother Tongue Day, scientific readings “Berezil – Spring Ukrainian modernist theatre”, and seminar “Ukraine – a miracle for me!” are events which combine scientific and practical educational activities, provide an opportunity for younger generation to try themselves as scholars, and at the same time allow them to deepen their knowledge of significant phenomena of Ukrainian language and culture.




                           

                           

 


 

Cultural events, entertainment: 

    Through classes, teachers of the department, in addition to educational purpose, always set themselves, and educational, as educators firmly believe that technical training and educational process should be organically combined into a single unit, which is essential for the formation and identity formation as a citizen of Ukraine, and future Representative technical elite. The department planned and implemented the concept of "educational training", sponsored by the Ukrainian philosopher and educator Pamfil Jurkevych.
Important role in the department staff ranks holding various educational activities by which our youth understands the philosophical meaning of life and see the world at its best. This idea has been realized through the following projects:

  •       regular intellectual and entertaining events (Day of Ukrainian Literature, World Poetry Day, "Autumn – time to read");
  •       debates and discussions dedicated to Mother Tongue Day, International Day of Theatre;
  •       performance dedicated to prominent resident of Lviv, a poet Bohdan Ihor Antonych;
  •       lectures and discussions to commemorate victims of the famine in 1930s;
  •       commemoration of the 70th anniversary of forced deportation of Ukrainian citizens to labour camps in Germany;
  •       concert and performance dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the birth Markiyan Shashkevych;
  •       annual celebrations devoted to Taras Shevchenko’s artistic heritage;
  •       poetry readings of M. Vinhranovskiy;
  •       annual workshop on painting pysankas;
  •       annual events dedicated to the tragedy at Chernobyl nuclear power station.

 
Teachers of the department introduced a new kind of classes – cinema lectures, which cover Ukrainian and foreign poetic cinema. Before watching a film there is a brief introductory lecture on the important issues raised in it, the director and film cast.
Cadets and students join in a drama club. Together with teachers they visit theatres and discuss performances, which enriches their outlook. Such activities, as well as organizing tours of Lviv, excursions to museums and exhibition halls, promote interest in culture, develop artistic taste, and inspire cadets’ and students’ own creativity.

Scientific research work: 

    The department cooperates with the peer departments of language training of Fire Academy in Kharkiv, Lviv State University of Internal Affairs, the Department of Ukrainian literature and  the Department of Ukrainian Language and Applied Linguistics of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Lviv Branch of the Dnepropetrovsk National University of Railway Transport and Lviv Branch of the European University.


Information for entrants: 


The Department staff provides teaching courses that develop practical skills in professional communication and increase the overall level of individual language culture. The initiative and aim of lecturers and teachers of the department is to facilitate the learning process and improve the quality of education. With this aim elective courses in Ukrainian language “Advanced language training” and “Research and development basics for cadets and students” were introduced in the curriculum.
