Department of Applied Psychology and Pedagogy

 

The department was established in May 2006 on the initiative of Mykhailo Kozyar, the doctor of pedagogical sciences, professor, lieutenant-general of civil defence, honored worker of Education of Ukraine.
In April 2020,Roksolana Sirko, Doctor of Psychology, Associate Professor, Colonel of the Civil Defense Service, was appointed Head of the Department.
Scientific and pedagogical staff of the department provides educational and methodological, organizational, informational and educational work with cadets and graduates of the University. The department trains specialists with a bachelor's and master's degree in the field of knowledge 05 "Social and Behavioral Sciences" in the specialty 053 Psychology. Graduate psychologists study a set of psychological disciplines (general psychology; history of psychology; social psychology, age psychology, basics of psychological counseling, basics of psychocorrection, etc.), as well as professionally oriented disciplines necessary for psychologists in emergency conditions, psychology of post-traumatic rehabilitation, psychology of crisis situations, legal psychology, military psychology.
Since 2016, the department has been training doctors of philosophy in the specialty 015 "Professional Education".

History of the department: 

 

The department was established in May 2006 on the initiative of Mykhailo Kozyar, the doctor of pedagogical sciences, professor, lieutenant-general of civil defence, honored worker of Education of Ukraine, who was its head until September 2012.

Today the department operates within the structure of the Institute of Psychology and Social Protection of LSU LS. Olena Kryvopyshyna, doctor of Sciences in Psychology and associate professor, was appointed as the head of the department in September 2012.

Research and teaching staff of the department provides teaching, organizational, informational and educational work among cadets and students of the university.

The department provides training for the qualification levels of Bachelor and Master of Science in such field as 0301 “Social and Political Sciences” in the direction of 6.010103, 8.03010301 “Practical Psychology”.

The department also provides professional training for psychologists for different sectors of production and non-production sphere. Specialist of “Applied Psychology” can be appointed as a psychologist to work in psycological services and centers, in factories, in educational institutions and health care institutions, in social sector, that provides diagnostic, preventive and psychological correction work.

Psychological direction of training specialists of State Emergency Service of Ukraine is aimed at improving worker’s mental health of rescue service and mastering the skills of self-control in stressful situations.

Future psychologists study  basic set of psychological disciplines (General Psychology, Pistory of psychology, Social Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Fundamentals of Psychological Counseling, Fundamentals of Psychocorrection, etc.), and also special courses on how a psychologist should work  in emergency situations     (Extreme Professional Activities in Emergencies, Extreme Psychology, Professional Competence for Activities in Emergencies, Post-traumatic Rehabilitation Psychology).

Complex practical trainings on the basis of psychological training center of the university, office relaxation, and computer classes for studying of psychodiagnostic methods help to improve the effectiveness of professional training.

Academic staff consists of 15 members: 1 Doctor of Sciences in Psychology and 1 Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, 2 PhDs in Pedagogical Sciences, 4 PhDs in Psychology and 7 lecturers.

Scientific-methodical work of the department: 

The main direction of educational and methodical work is to ensure teaching professional disciplines of the specialty 6.030103, 7.03010301 “Applied Psychology”. To improve the quality of education, teachers of the department create  training and information, scientific and methodical literature, and several textbooks and instructional recommendations were published, including: “Professional Training for Working  in Extreme Conditions” ( by M. Kozyar); “Essencials of Accurate Shooting” by M. Kozyar, B. Vinogradskiy, A. Kovalchuk); “Civil Protection. Fire  and Rescue work: Illustrated Dictionary” (authors: M. Kozyar, A. Shadrin, I. Kochan); “Research and Teaching dictionary” (authors : M. Kozyar, I. Kozlovska); “Military Psychology and Pedagogy” (authors: M. Kozyar, M. Variy, M. Koval); “Design and Creation of Information Educational Environment of the Institution” (by  M. Kozyar, T. Tkachenko, L. Shevchenko); “Psychology of Literary Creativity in Youth: a Monograph” (by O. Research and teaching staff of the department R.Sirko, V. Slobodianyk, O. Kutsyi on the basis of the head department of SES of Ukraine in Rivne region conducted a training course for psychologists of SES, education, health care, social protection spheres, Red Cross, volunteer organizations and public organizations of Lviv region.

During the training the main attention was paid to psychological support of ATO participants and psychological support of internally displaced persons with symptoms of maladjustment, increased aggression or anxiety. Training participants mastered the technique and strategy of systemic family therapy, “nonviolent communication” and methods of relieving psychological stress, post-traumatic stress using innovative psychotherapeutic approaches.

Interuniversity scientific and methodological seminar was initiated and four meetings were held: in February 2015 a joint meeting with the Department of Psychology of National University “Lviv Polytechnic” on “The Image of a Modern Hero”; in May 2015 – a joint meeting with the Department of Applied Psychology of Lviv State University of Internal Affairs on “The Activities of the Individual in Special Conditions”; in September 2015 – a joint meeting with the Department of Psychology of Lviv State University of Internal Affairs on “Psychological Aspects of Personnel Working in Extreme Conditions”; October 2015 – a joint meeting with Hetman Petro Sahaidachnyi National Army Academy on “Psychological Technologies of Overcoming Post-traumatic Stress Disorders by ATO participants”.

As part of career guidance, scientific and pedagogical staff of the department held introductory training seminars for psychologists of educational institutions. Hence in May, 2015 a seminar “Providing Emergency Psychological Assistance” with the headmasters of Zaliznychnyi District schools was held.

Department of Applied Psychology and Pedagogy initiated a club “Film Analyses” in order to deepen theoretical knowledge of behavior in emergency situations, where students and cadets do psychological analysis of films. In addition “Psychotherapy Workshop” is organised and “TRE-tension and trauma realizing exercises” technique is demonstated by the Department.





    

Material-technical base: 

The Department was allocated space in the school building of Faculty of Humanities and there are space lecture halls which are properly equipped to use projection and multimedia equipments. The students, cadets and teachers can use computer labs, modern library complex with two halls of digital library with Internet connection, software center and computer technology, athletic facilities, summer educational and sports center etc. 




Areas of research: 

The department conducts research work on the theme “Psychological and Pedagogical Aspects of Rescuers’ Professional Training to Work in Extreme Conditions” and a number of scientific researches in the following areas:

• psychology of creativity;

• mental health of personality and ways of  its correction;

• establishment of a professional psychologist;

• promoting healthy personality lifestyle;

• pedagogical aspects of personality development;

• addictive behavior and its prevention;

• psychological and psychophysiological selection

Olena Kryvopyshyna, Head of Department, Doctor of Sciences in Psychology, Associate Professor, is a regular participant of scientific seminars and conferences of the University and beyond, where current problems of psychological support in emergencies are reported and discussed.


Science students and cadets: 

During the training cadets and students are actively involved in research work under the supervision of qualified faculty members of the department. A scientific circle of cadets and students  successfully operates at the department, these students always take part  and are characterized by high results on a variety of contests, competitions and conferences both at our university and other educational institutions and abroad.
Psychology students and cadets together with supervisors, lecturers of the department have become active participants and co-organizers of the international scientific and practical conference of cadets and students: “Problems and Prospects of Ensuring Life Security Development” (March 2013).
The department conducts extensive research work, particularly practical and methodical seminar “Theory and Practice of Psychological Assistance to an Individual in Special Circumstances” (presenter: Master of Applied Psychology, James Hill, USA, Washington) started to work on 19 November 2013. The organizers and participants of the master-class were teachers and students of the department of Applied Psychology and Pedagogy of Lviv State University of Life Safety and the department of Psychology, Pedagogy and Social Administration of National University “Lviv Polytechnic”.
 



Cultural events, entertainment: 

In order to attract  attention to the national cultural heritage, explore the life, traditions and customs of the people of Ukraine, teachers of the department – curators of groups conduct educational activities, visit theaters, museums, exhibition halls, concerts, etc. 


Scientific research work: 

Scientific researches are conducted by students and post-graduate students   under the guidance of the academic staff. In particular, 5 PhDs defended their works under the direction of  Doctor of  Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Mykhailo Kozyar (Yuriy Kozlowskiy, Doctor of Sciences in Pedagogy, 13.00.01 – Theory and History of Pedagogy, “Theoretical and Methodological Bases for Research Activities Design of a Higher Educational Institution”, 2013, Andriy Lytvyn, Doctor of Sciences in Pedagogy, 13.00.04 – Theory and Methods of Professional Education, “Theoretical and Methodological Foundations of Educational Process Informatisation in Vocational Technical Institutions of Building Type”, 2012; Sergiy Kruk, PhD in Pedagogical Sciences, 13.00.07 – Theory and Methods of Education “Tolerance Development in the units of Emergencies”, 2011; Oleg Zarichanskyi, PhD in Pedagogical Sciences, 13.00.04 – Theory and Methods of Professional Education, “The formation of multi-level psycho-pedagogical training of personnel of departments of Emergency”,  2009; Oleg Gorokhivskiy, PhD in Pedagogical Sciences, 13.00.04 – Theory and Methods of Professional Education, “Development of Students’ Cognitive Activity in the Pocess of Studying Special Subjects in Higher Educational Institutions of the Ministry of Emergency Situations”, 2006), three other candidates are finishing writing their research papers.   Research and teaching staff of the department have been actively involved in developing and implementing programs of psychological support of Training Call-Center of Operative Rescue Service 112.

     In addition, a system of psychological and vocational testing has been developed and implemented by academic staff of the department and workers of Medical Service of the University, which is used during training sessions in Psychological and Training Centre.

Since 2009, a new practice for school and pre-school age children preparation for secure action in emergency situations was introduced, that’s why introductory classes are held in Psychological and Training Centre of LSU LS.

Research and teaching staff take active part in scientific, educational and methodological work of the Univercity.They organize and hold conferences, roundtable discussions, produce educational and methodological materials, develop methodological recommendations for teaching lessons.

Applied Psychology students and cadets took part in the competition of cadents’ and students’ research works related to “psychology of work in extreme conditions”. A student I. Kulchytska with her work “Psychological Readiness of Applied Psychologist in the Emergency Zone” (scientific adviser R.Sirko) took the second place; a cadet M. Nechyporuk with his work “Psychological Readiness of Future Rescuers to Actions in Emergency Zone” (scientific adviser O. A. Kutsyi) took the third place.

VII All-Ukrainian conference “Personality in Extreme Conditions” (May, 20, 2015) was held and 19 Doctors and over 100 PhDs took part in it. Electronic version of research works was published. Conference participants discussed relevant isssues concerning overcoming crisis and extreme situations by a personality. In the course of the conference a workshop “Work with ATO participants” was held by Zoriana Koshulynska, a psychologist of Lviv Regional Clinical Psychiatric Hospital.

II roundtable discussion on the occasion of Psychologist’s day “Remarkable Personalities in Psychology: history, modernity and prospects” (June, 2015) was held, relevant issues of modern psychological science were discussed. The number of participants who took part in the discussion is 80; among them are 3 professors, 25 PhDs, teachers and students of higher educational establishments. The materials of Roundtable discussion were published online.

Students and cadets who have chosen the profession of Applied Psychology take internships in civil activities (as a practical psychologist in educational institutions, specialized psychotherapy clinics) and also in professional activities (as a practical psychologist at camp meetings in educational and training facilities in the village Tsuniv, Gorodok district, Lviv region, in a fire training department where are put on duty).

Job prospects:

• practical psychologist in police force ( State Emergency Service, Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Security Service of Ukraine, Department of Border Guard Service of Ukraine, State Customs Service etc);

• practical psychologist in psychological services of education (practical psychologist in kindergartens, special kindergartens, orphanages, secondary schools, vocational-technical education and higher educational institutions);

• lecturer of Psychology (in educational institutions of all levels of accreditation);

• recruitment manager (businesses, private and public enterprises);

• manager of advertising (television, radio, and other areas of production and non-production workers)

• counseling Psychologist (private psychotherapeutic centers, hospitals of all types of ownership, coaching centers);

• valeopsychologist etc.

Boys who are 3rd or 4th year students (in the form of a self-supporting training) have an opportunity (optional) to undergo training at the military department and gain military rank – lieutenant of reserve.
