    The department ensures development of students’ and cadets’ physical and psychological traits essential for rescue activities, coping with physical exertion, psychic pressure and unfavourable factors of professional activity. The main task of the department is specialists training for SES units of Ukraine.

History of the department: 

Special Rescue Training and Physical Education Department
 In 1963 - 1976 the head of the cycle was Golubeyko M.D., in 1976 - Yakushev V.M. In 1977, the positions of chief of the military cycle and deputy chief of the military training school were separated. 1984 - 1985 the head of the cycle was Kagitin I.M., in 1992 - 1998 Zhelizko V.F. - record holder and champion of the USSR and the USSR in fire and applied sports in overcoming the 100th. Obstacle lanes and fire relay 4x100m. In 1998 - 1999 - Kozyar M.M. - Vice-Rector of the Lviv Fire and Technical School for Military Units and Regime was also the head of the cycle of special and physical training. In 1999 - 2000 Koval MS - Vice-Rector of the Lviv Fire and Technical School for the military unit led the cycle of special and physical training. In 2000 - 2001 the head of the cycle of special and physical training was Bolibrukh B.V.
In 2001 Lviv Fire and Technical School of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine was reorganized into the Lviv Institute of Fire Safety of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. In the same year, the Department of Special and Physical Training was established on the basis of the cycle of special and physical training. In 2001 - 2004 - the head of the department of special and physical training was Lashch V.A.
2004 - A.M. Kovalchuk was appointed Head of the Department of Special and Physical Training. In 2006, the department was renamed the Department of Special Rescue Training and Physical Education.

Department staff: 

    The Department staff includes 8 teachers, 2 of them are PhDs. Thesis researches of other teachers are being carried out.

“Physical Education as a Basis of Operational and Rescue Activities in Emergency Situations” (R.Ratushnii, A. Kovalchuk, A.  Petrenko, Y.  Baran). The coursebook examines the essentials of physical education organization in the units of SES of Ukraine, means and methods of cultivating professionally important traits and skills in students and cadets of higher educational institutions of SES of Ukraine. It is for teachers, cadets and students of higher educational institutions SES of Ukraine and is aimed at increasing the efficiency of physical education process in  higher educational institutions of SES of Ukraine.
 

“Gymnastics” (A. Kovalchuk, Y. Antoshkiv) The coursebook gives description of gymnastics and its kinds. It is for teachers and cadets of higher educational establishments of MES, MIA, MD of Ukraine for giving lessons in gymnastics. The coursebook highlights terminology of gymnastic exercises, line training, general developing exercises, applied and aerobic exercises etc. The coursebook gives methodical recommendations for developing a good posture;

“Professional Applied Physical Training of Cadets in Higher Educational Establishments of MES of Ukraine. (A.  Kovalchuk, Y.  Antoshkiv) The coursebook gives main recommendations for organization and conducting professional applied physical training with cadets, students of higher educational establishments and Fire Rescue Service staff. The coursebook is for teachers of physical education and special physical training, subunit commanders of higher educational establishments of MES of Ukraine. It will help to effectively choose and use physical education and training equipment, forms of physical education for improving professional training of future Fire Rescue Service staff.

“Professional shooting training of the staff of Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine in high-speed shooting exercises” (M. Kozyar, B. Vynohradskyi, A. Kovalchuk) The coursebook investigates the issues of tactic and technical skill parameters improvement of the staff of Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine during high-speed shooting exercises; introduction of up-to-date systems of tempo and rhythm action dynamics characteristics control; variants of individual and group motor activity models building; methodical techniques of professional shooting mastery optimization.

“The essentials of accurate shooting” (M. Kozyar, B. A.Vynohradskyi, A. Kovalchuk). The essentials of accurate shooting are described in the coursebook. It is for teachers and cadets of higher educational establishments of State Emergency Service of Ukraine, Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Ministry of Defence of Ukraine for giving lessons in shooting training. Description of different kinds of shooting sport, physical infrastructure for giving lessons in shooting sport, issues of internal and external ballistics are highlighted in the coursebook. The recommendations for elimination of unfavorable effects of shooting on human organism are given.
“Physical Education of Cadets in Higher Educational Establishments of State Emergency Service of Ukraine during a day” (R.  Ratushnyi, V.  Koshelenko, A.  Kovalchuk, Y.  Antoshkiv). The process of cadets’ physical education during a day, forms and methods of giving lessons in physical education are described in the course book. It is for students and cadets of higher educational establishments of State Emergency Service of Ukraine for providing academic information concerning the process of improving cadet’s physical education during a day.

 

“Artistic Gymnastics” (Ratushnyi R. , Koshelenko V. , Kovalchuk A. , Antoshkiv Y.). The coursebook gives description of artistic gymnastics and its types. It is for students and cadets of higher educational establishments of State Emergency Service of Ukraine for giving lessons in artistic gymnastics.The terminology of athletic exercises, kettlebell lifting, body building and fitness are highlighted in the coursebook. Methodical recommendations concerning physical exercises on exercise machines are given in the coursebook. 
 
Scientific invention: “Exercise machine for improving shooting skill in rapid shooting exercises” (V.  Pyatkov, A.  Kovalchuk, M. MKozyar, B. Vynohradskyi, V. Sokolovskyi)
 
Description of exercise machine:
  • ·Wireless recording of temporal characteristics of technical and tactical shooter actions in rapid shooting exercises;

  • ·Assessment of shot cycle quality, series of shots, temporal characteristics of technical and tactical shooter actions in rapid shooting exercises;

  • ·Shooter readiness objectification through identification of main features, quantitative assessment of technical and tactical shooter actions

  • giving lessons in physical education and training for officers of LSULS;
  • sports training in the following sections: five-a-side, basketball, fitness, volleyball, combat hopak, badminton, table tennis;


Sports and Athletics Center

Purpose of the facility:

  • giving lessons in physical education and training for officers of LSU LS;
  • sportsmen training in kettle bell lifting, powerlifting.

 

Rescue training center


The complex was established in 2020 and aims to improve the quality of educational services in the field of rescue training. Thanks to the modern equipment of the rescue training center, it is possible to practice a number of practical skills, in particular:

  • to work out the process of releasing the victim from the transformer car based on the Toyota Avensis chassis using modern equipment and providing him with first aid;
  • to study the elements of active and passive safety on the basis of the simulator (Mercedes-Benz), simulation of airbags;
  • to work out technical elements of movement on vertical ropes with use of climbing equipment with change of the direction of movement.
  • to rescue victims from suspended chairlifts in various ways, in emergency operation.

 

 


Alpine Park


Alpine Park refers to a system of wooden platforms, interconnected facilities: campus board, obstacle course, pendulous and steeply inclined crossings, ropeway, stairs, and small bridges. These elements are fastened 5-20 metres high above the ground.
Purpose of the facility:

  • giving lessons in fire and rescue training, rescue training;
  • sportsmen training in fire-applied sport and rescue training.


 
 

Outdoor Sports Ground for Game Sport


    Purpose of the facility:
  • giving lessons in physical education; sportsmen training in five-a-side and handball;
  • holding five-a-side and handball competitions.

  • active rest of cadets and students of LSU LS.

During studies cadets and students take active part in scientific research under the direction of qualified academic staff.  Research topics are: A. L. Orel “Development of strength by means of gymnastics”, A. V. Panasuk “Technology of victim’s descent with the help of steeplejack equipment”, K. S. Tkachenko “Active games as a means of applied professional training of employee in State Emergency Service of Ukraine”, N. V. Chudinova “Occupational safety and sports traumatism prophylaxis during athletics, swimming, wrestling trainings and sports games. 
 

Cultural events, entertainment: 

     Leisure time
 
Academic staff of Special Rescue Training and Physical Education Department takes active part in organizing cultural events and active leisure of students and cadets of LSULS. It includes organization of “Sports and Athletics Meeting of LSULS” between educational garrisons, ski racing, sports festivals.
One of the priority lines of sports life in the University is development and popularization of applied professional kinds of sport among the staff that are aimed at improving professional skills, physical and psychological training of future specialists of State Emergency Service of Ukraine.
In the university there are the following sports circles:
fire-applied sport, officer triathlon; judo and martial art; Greco-Roman wrestling, kickboxing and hand-to-hand, boxing, cross country running, futsal, volleyball, table tennis, kettlebell lifting, orienteering, basketball, rescue training, and arm-wrestling,
Academic staff of the Department organizes Lviv sightseeing tours; visit theatres, museums, exhibition halls, philharmonics, Museum of Folk Architecture and Household “Shevchenkivskyi Hai”, cinemas, etc.

Scientific and pedagogical staff of the department carry out research in the following areas:
"Improvement of professional and applied physical training of permanent and variable staff of LSU LS";

"Analysis of fire and rescue sports in Ukraine on the path to European integration in the world community";
"The relationship between physical and psychological training of the rescuer";
"Increasing the fire resistance of reinforced concrete structures";
"Research of the normative base of assessment of the level of physical fitness of the variable and permanent staff of LSU LS";
Research work with cadets and students is carried out in the following areas:
Assessment of the level of physical fitness of cadets and students of LSU LS;
Improving the professional and applied physical training of cadets and students of LSU LS;
Analysis of the features of rescuing people from buildings for low-mobility groups;
Carrying out rescue operations with the use of special climbing equipment and rescue ropes;
Analysis of the operation of hoist systems during emergency rescue operations;
 
The department has completed and continues to perform research work aimed at solving practical problems that arise in the units of the State Service of Ukraine for Emergencies, in particular:
Methodical recommendations on compliance with the standards of training exercises for the preparation of members of the rank and file and senior staff of the Civil Protection Service and employees of the Rescue and Rescue Service of the Civil Protection of the SES of Ukraine to perform assigned tasks. The main target of Special Rescue Training and Physical Education Department is cultivating student’s and cadets’ devotion to their profession, faithfulness to their duty and oath; cultivating moral and psychological values and willpower, ability to orient oneself in difficult situations and make effective decisions; preparing dependable and disciplined officers of State Emergency Service of Ukraine.
 

Physical Education

     Physical Education is a constituent part of applied professional training of future rescuers. Since the discipline is aimed at preparing specialists with a high level of physical fitness, able to efficiently carry out rescue tasks, and cope with huge mental, neuropsychic and physical loads. Physical education has a positive effect on the level of professional development, cultivation of moral and psychological values of future rescuers and it is also an efficient way of all-round and harmonious development of personality.
The main aim of physical education is development and continuous improvement of physical skills; efficient decision making, physical fitness and health improvement, organism resistance to unfavourable factors effect when carrying out rescue operations. 
There are the following forms of Physical Education in LSU LS:
  • morning exercises
  • practical lessons;
  • training in sports circles;
  • training in sports sections;
  • individual training;
  • sporting events.

 
Practical lessons are the main type of physical education lessons and are aimed at development of physical qualities, acquiring necessary motor abilities and skills. 
Practical lessons are held in gyms equipped with appliances and special training equipment on outdoor sports grounds, obstacle courses and sports and learning complex. Assessment of students and cadets in physical education involve annual testing according to Academic Credit System requirements. At the end of the course there is an exam in the discipline “Physical Education”.

 


 

Rescue Training
 Rescue training in LSU LS is a constituent part of professional training, an important and inseparable part of cadets’ and students’ education.  The program of rescue training incorporates theoretical and practical parts. Their content involves acquiring knowledge and skills necessary for rescue works in city conditions.
The top priority task of fire and rescue subunits during fire extinguishment and emergency situations elimination is carrying out search-and-rescue operations aimed at rescuing victims. Search-and-rescue works have higher requirements for the time of their performance. 
Search-and-rescue works are carried out as a rule in restricted and dangerous conditions without energy source.  There are the following preconditions for efficient performance of these works: equipment and appliances that are simple in their design, reliable and not dependable on their energy source; the rescuers should have high level of physical fitness, be able to efficiently carry out rescue tasks, cope with huge mental, neuropsychic and physical loads. Therefore rescue training is an integral part of students’ and cadets’ education and training, and an important part of professional training.
The outcome of rescue training is acquisition of necessary knowledge and skills for efficient search and rescue works.
      

Fire and Rescue Training


    

The discipline “Fire and Rescue Training” is aimed at acquiring skills of operating search and rescue equipment, improving lesson organization in fire and rescue training performing the roles of squad leader, guard commander; psychological training improvement; studying training organization and competitions holding in fire applied sport.

Each practical lesson is aimed at performing (teaching, training) not more than two exercises. Educational activities, methods and ways of their performance contribute to development of cadets’ physical strength, agility, endurance, courage; improve skills during the whole process of studying through systematic repetition of previously learnt exercises in different conditions and combinations.

The cadets, who have acquired rules of occupational safety, have practical skills in work with search-and-rescue equipment and appliances are allowed to have individual training. Cadets study theoretical essentials of fire applied sport and rules of conducting lessons for rated sportsman and judges in fire applies sport training. Theoretical course of Fire and Rescue Training is studied at lectures. Practical lessons are held in the form of training and individual or team sports.
